Ahead of WWDC kicking off on Monday, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has put out a fresh newsletter detailing what to expect from Apple next week. Including quite a bit about what Apple plans to do with AI, or as it’s being called “Apple Intelligence”.

Perhaps one of the more interesting tidbits from Gurman today is that Apple’s new AI features won’t work on any iPhone that isn’t the iPhone 15 Pro or the new iPhone 16 models that will launch later this year. Regarding iPads and Macs, you’ll need an M1 chip or newer for these AI features.

Apple will integrate AI into as many of its apps as possible

The approach that Apple is taking with AI might sound familiar. It wants to bring AI into as many of its apps as it possibly can. And use it in ways that would ease the daily lives of consumers. Apple wants AI to help consumers, not become a burden to consumers. Apple isn’t as focused on the popular technology features like image and video generation, but instead focusing on features with broader appeal.

Apple will make the AI suite an option, so you won’t have to just “live with” these new features, as you would on a Galaxy S24. And of course, it’ll first debut as a beta.

Apple’s AI will be powered by OpenAI and its own technology. So, the services will rely on either on-device processing or cloud-based computing, depending on the task at hand. Apple has also included a new algorithm in the software updates that will determine which approach is best for each particular task.

One of the major features that Apple is focusing on here with AI is going to be summarization. We’ve seen this pop up in a few of the leaks about iOS 18 recently. Apple is working on features that can quickly recap articles and web pages in its Safari browser. It can also sum up meeting notes, text messages and emails. As well as notifications, which iOS already sort of does right now. The other part is going to be reply suggestions. With the iPhone, being able to automatically create fully fleshed-out responses to emails and text messages.

Finally, Siri is getting a big upgrade in this AI push, with Apple planning a major revamp for it based on large language models (LLMs). For the first time, Siri will have precise control over individual features and actions within apps. So users can tell Siri to delete an email, edit a photo or summarize a news article. Apple will plan to expand this to third-party apps over time.

The WWDC keynote is expected to be about half AI features. So that’s going to be around an hour of AI, out of the two hours that the keynote will run.
