City Power has alerted residents in several Johannesburg suburbs about the possibility of simultaneous load reduction and load shedding if electricity usage remains high during the winter months.

Warning Issued by City Power

City Power has cautioned that high electricity consumption in certain areas could destabilize the grid, especially during the peak winter demand.

Potential Power Cuts: “If energy consumption is not reduced, load reduction will continue parallel to load shedding in these areas,” said City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena.
Peak Usage: The highest usage occurs between 4 AM and 10 AM, and again in the evenings.

The following high-density suburbs have been identified as high-users that need to lower their consumption to avoid power cuts:

City Power emphasized that failing infrastructure could delay repairs and impact essential services such as healthcare, schools, and small businesses.

This is not the first warning; residents received a similar caution on May 23. The ongoing cold snap necessitated a reminder of the importance of reducing electricity usage.

Despite City Power’s efforts to prepare for the extreme winter weather, customer cooperation is crucial for maintaining a stable power supply. “Customer cooperation is essential to maintaining a stable and uninterrupted power supply,” reiterated Mangena.

Residents in these areas are urged to conserve energy to prevent dual electricity constraints and ensure a stable power supply throughout the winter.
